Teach Them to Be Still

“Mom, he’s screaming and bawling and it’s making me scared!! I don’t know what to do and I’m alone!!”

Cade and I were gone and that’s often how it goes, we are living in a moment totally unaware of events happening elsewhere at the very same time.

Peyton had to leave for a quick 15 min meeting next door and so our two were at home.
Grayson got upset over something and as his emotions grew bigger Claire’s became more desperate.

And we could do nothing.

In fact, we didn’t even see the text until 20 min later when we climbed in our car to head home, about 10 minutes from our house.

I knew they were ok but I’m the mom and I know how to comfort, not just the crier but the stressed little girl unsure of what to do. So we drove home and in my mind I was preparing to be the calm walking into a storm.

Or so I thought that’s what my role would be.

What Mom Does

When we walked in the door she was cuddled up next to him on the couch listening to a peaceful song from our Sunday songs playlist. (Our tradition before bed on Sundays is to listen to a quiet song all piled up on a bed together)

A song about peace in Christ.

A moment where she actually needed it.

I said, Claire!! You got him calm, how did you do it?!

To which she replied, “I was so scared with how loud and upset he was and the thought came to me, do what mom does and help him feel peace and I knew music would do that.”

In the actual moment I got to see what all mothers yearn to know, are they going to turn out ok based on the truths I’m trying to teach them?

How Peace Feels

I have felt so strongly to teach them to be still and what peace feels. Over and over again I’ve felt pulled towards stillness for myself and for them and I’ve taken that feeling very seriously.

When they are in the storm I want them to feel the difference and to know where to turn.

“And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ, and we write according to our prophecies, that our children may know to what source they may look…”
2 Nephi 25:26
